This summer, we were extremely fortunate to hire Sarah Jo Galvin to our staff as a behavioral specialist and student intervention planner. Miss Galvin brings to the Scranton school a great deal of experience over the past twelve years where she has worked as a foster care case manager, psychiatric security specialist, and adolescent behavioral health technician. We are in the development stages of this position and really focusing on how we can be a resource for our students when they are dealing with struggles emotionally and physically. Miss Galvin is really working hard to develop relationships with our students, guide them through difficult times by providing strategies they can use, and will be able to also lead some professional development with our staff. Welcome to our team Miss Galvin.
In North Dakota, the law requires that every two years, each school district shall provide at least eight hours of professional development on youth behavioral health (which includes mental health, trauma, suicide prevention, etc.) to teachers and administrators. Last year, our staff partnered with the Southwest Health District and Dickinson Public Schools to train on strategies to reduce anxiety and challenging behaviors in students. We worked with Dr. Jessica Minahan on building strategies to help engage students and teach them the skills necessary to react appropriately in stressful situations. The correlation between increased anxiety and trauma with the ability to access working memory was a theme for the day. We realize we must continue this training, as a one day inservice is only as good as the follow through of that training.
As superintendent, I believe it is important to communicate the things we are doing at Scranton Public School to improve not only the learning environment, but also to become better at providing the resources our students need to be safe and confident in their abilities to manage the fast changing environment in which they are trying to maneuver. As always, if you have questions or concerns over what we are doing to provide a top-notch learning environment, please do not hesitate to give me a call or stop in.
Sincerely,
Kelly Pierce
Superintendent
